History of Wedding Anniversary Gift Lists
Tradition Dates Back to the Middle Ages
Although the anniversary gift lists on this website are based on the lists provided by the Chicago Public Library, the tradition of giving specific anniversary gifts based on the number of years a couple has been married dates back to the Middle Ages.
"The practice of observing the wedding anniversary, while primarily an excuse for gift-giving, probably has underlying it a belief in the correspondence of certain luck-bringing substances with a distinct number of years." "According to Hallmark research, the custom of associating silver with the 25th wedding anniversary and gold with the 50th wedding anniversary appear to have originated in the Germanic region of Middle Europe. The silver anniversary included a husband giving his wife a silver garland when they had been married 25 years."

20th Century -- Wedding Anniversary Gift Giving
"Emily Post listed "eight anniversaries know to all" in her 1922 Blue Book of Social Usage [listing 1st, 5th, 10th, 15th, 20th, 25th, 50th, and 75th anniversaries]. Mrs. Post then went on to report that "until comparatively modern times, the eight anniversaries were all that were acknowledged." She then recognized the trend toward celebrating additonal anniversaries and listed a symbolic anniversary gift for each of the first fifteen years of marriage and one for every five years after that. This is the basis for the lists we use today."

Wedding Programs
Wedding programs outline your wedding, allowing wedding guests to follow along with the wedding ceremony and any unfamiliar wedding rituals that may be included.

When passing the programs to your guests, there are three options:
- Have the ushers hand the programs as they are guiding your guests to their seats;
- Include children in your wedding by having them hand the programs to your guests as they arrive
- If it is a small wedding you may lay a few programs in the chairs or pews.

Sections of a Wedding Program
* Section I: Wedding Program Title:
The Program Title includes the bride's name, groom's name, date and day, time, wedding ceremony location, city and state.

* Section II: Order of Service:
This section outlines the ceremony segments such as: prelude, processional, solo, invocation, readings, marriage ceremony, unity candle lighting, recessional, etc. You can also include music titles with composer, scripture passages with readers, words for short congregational prayers and any special notations you may have. Usually there is not enough room to include the entire songs or readings. If they are not listed in the prayer books, you can print them on the backside of the wedding program.

* Section III: Wedding Ceremony Participants:
This section lists the participants in the wedding. You may list the participants under separate headings (such as "Maid of Honor", "Best Man", etc.) or you may list all participants under the same heading (such as: "Wedding Participants"). Proper names should be used.  Also use titles such as Miss, Ms. or Mrs. Do NOT use nicknames!

* Section IV: Special Note:
Show your guests you are happy they are sharing in your special day by writing a special thanks to all your guests. You may also include a special thank you message to your guests who have traveled long distances to be with you. You may also honor a deceased relative or friend. Instead of a personal message, you can have a special prayer or poem for your guests.
In this section, also include any necessary information for your guests.  Information such as release of doves/butterflies to follow in front of church or reception location and time.

Make sure that you save a few extra copies for yourself. It will make a nice keepsake for your scrapbook!

Treat your skin at home and look Radiant!

Oatmeal masks
These masks have scientific backing: Oatmeal has been found to reduce inflammation and sooth irritated skin, which could help reduce redness and the size of a nasty zit. Mix together 2 teaspoons of oatmeal with 1 teaspoon of baking soda and water to form a paste; rub over the problem areas, and then rinse thoroughly.

Turmeric facemask
You may not have heard of this one, but Indian brides have been using it the night before their weddings for centuries. Turmeric has anti-inflammation and antibacterial properties that can help fight the bacteria that cause acne. Make a mask with this recipe from The Well Daily:
Skin-Soothing Turmeric Mask
  • 2 tablespoons plain yogurt
  • 1/2 teaspoon dry turmeric powder
  • 2 teaspoons organic honey
Mix ingredients in a small bowl. After cleansing, spread the mask on your face and leave for 10 to 15 minutes. Rinse and enjoy brighter, healthier skin.

Summer Honey Mask
With over 80 nutrients—including skin rejuvinating antioxidants—honey not only does the body good, but its benefits extends to our skin. Honey acts as a natural moisturizer, as well as an anti-irritant (think: rosacea)—perfect for those with oily, irritated or blemished skin!
You must be thinking, you've gotta bee kidding me. Nope! See for yourself in this simply yummy summer honey mask:
Ingredients
·         3 Tbs oats
·         1/4 cup plain organic yogurt
·         1 Tbs honey
Directions
·         In a blender, grind the oats into a course powder.
·         Pour the powder in a bowl, then add the yogurt and honey and blend well.
·         Let it sit for 10 minutes to allow the oats to become thoroughly moistened by the honey and yogurt.
·         Apply the mixture to your face, lie down and enjoy the soothing and hydrating properties of this mask! This can get a bit messy, so make sure to place a towel under you head.
Rinse after 10-15 min.

Wedding Cakes - Finding the Right Baker
Wedding Cakes are the grand finale to a reception - so shouldn't they be breathtaking? Here is advice on how to find a wedding cake baker and questions you should ask.

Cupcakes vs. Wedding Cakes: The Showdown!
Wedding cupcakes keep popping up again and again in the media as a way to save money on your wedding or adding a bit of whimsy to the reception. But what's the truth? Are they really a good alternative to a wedding cake? I decided to have a showdown and see who could be quicker on the draw when it came to cost, style, and tradition. Which one do you think will win?
COST - This is the big question, isn't it? When wedding cupcakes first became a trend, they were touted as a great way to save money: spend a buck or two for a cupcake rather than $4 or $5 per slice for cake. But bakers soon caught on that doing wedding cupcakes are just as much work – if not more – than a traditional cake. Every single one of those suckers has to be baked and iced. If you're doing specialty decorations, you'll need one for each cupcake. And, most bakeries will rent you a cake stand, but you might have to purchase a cupcake stand.   In the end, it all comes down to choices.
Questions to ask your Wedding Cake Designer
Before you visit a potential wedding cake baker or designer, print out this list of questions to ask. You'll make sure to cover all the bases, avoid disasters, and get the wedding cake of your dreams.
Do you have a portfolio of previous wedding cakes you've made that we can look at?


·         Will you be having a tasting soon that we can attend and try various kinds of wedding cake and cake fillings??

·         Can you supply references?

·         Will you do a custom wedding cake, or are there a set number of designs for us to choose from?

·         How adaptable are wedding cake designs, especially due to budget concerns?

·         Do you have or can you rent items like cake toppers, stands, tiers, fountains, and cutters? Will we be billed extra?

·         If I want to use fresh flowers on my cake, will you coordinate with my florist, or will I have to manage getting the flowers to you?

·         What ingredients do you typically use? What kind of icing do you use?
(Better ingredients will cost more, but will make the cake taste better)

·         How long before our wedding are the cakes prepared? How long does it take to make a cake?
(The closer to your wedding that the cake is prepared, the better it will taste. BUT, anyone who tells you that they can bake a wedding cake in a day is not telling you the truth, or isn't being realistic. Due to the complicated nature of wedding cakes, they usually take between three and five days. )

·         Are your wedding cakes priced by the slice? Is there an extra cost for special fillings or details? Will you charge extra for my design? Is there a price list I can take home with me to study?

·         Can you give me a written proposal I can take home?

·         Do you do deliver? How much does it cost? Will the delivery person be able to make emergency frosting or decoration repairs and arrange the cake table?  (For anything even slightly complicated, getting them to deliver is best. You won't want to be stuck with 150 ruined pieces of wedding cake at $8 per slice, much less on the morning of your wedding.)

Top Tabletop Trends

Fairy Tale-inspired
This trend was inspired by movies like Snow White and the Huntsman and designer wedding gowns that feature light and gauzy skirts fit for a princess. Terrariums are landing on fairy tale inspired reception tables with whimsical woodland vignettes. We’re also seeing spun sugar on wedding cakes and cupcakes as well as whimsical treats like Popsicles.

Sheer Tradition
Last year everyone from Kate Middleton to Bella Swan wore gowns featuring long sleeves and lace. We’re seeing elegant lace overlays on reception tables and chairs, wrapped around flower vases and mimicked in lace patterned fondant on cakes. We’re hearing brides are loving flavored fondant to make the cakes as tasty as they are beautiful.

Hollywood Glamour
With movies like My Week with Marilyn and The Artist capturing brides’ imaginations, we’re seeing a huge resurgence of Hollywood glamour inspired receptions. Hollywood inspired receptions feature long dramatic tables for dinner as well as luxurious lounges for after dinner cocktails. Star chefs are plating food with two or three smaller bites per plate, giving guests a chance to taste multiple exotic flavors. Glam cakes are all about sugar flowers piled high!

The Ritzy Ranch
Ritzy Ranch weddings take last year’s jelly jars and wild flowers up a notch with heirloom details and gilded edges. Inspired by the nuptials of Lauren Bush and David Lauren, reception tables feature local meats and produce and tons of candlelight. Cakes are loaded with flowers, sugar or fresh, and are presented on moss-covered pedestals.

Here’s how to get your big news in the papers &
get that all important document 

Placing wedding and engagement announcements is a piece of cake. Simply call the paper(s) of your choice and request an announcement form, e-mail them, fill it out online, or stop by in person. Complete the form and return it with a photograph (some papers print the bride’s picture only). Most newspapers prefer black-and-white glossies or high resolu­tion photos e-mailed to them. 

Engagement announcements are usually short, listing only the names of the prospective bride and groom, their parents’ names and the wedding date. Pictures are sometimes published with engagement announcements.

Wedding announcements go into more detail, featuring the couple’s names, parents’ names and their city and state if they’re from out of town. Also listed are the church, wedding date and members of the wedding party. A pho­tograph may be included at this time.

Information deadlines vary by publica­tion. Engagement information may be required up to seven weeks in advance, while wedding announcements might be accepted up to a month or two after the celebration. The dailies have more rigid deadlines. Call each newspaper for specific deadlines.

The Marriage License
You Can’t Be Wed Without It!
The hard part is almost over — the bridal gown has been bought and the invitations are in the mail.  Getting your mar­riage license is one of the last tasks before you can say, “I do.”
The procedure for obtaining your license is basically the same all over Texas. Together, the prospective bride and groom must visit the office of the county clerk.

·         All applicants must provide proof of age and identity with a valid Texas drivers license, valid Texas DPS I.D., Military I.D., passport, or any certificate of License issued by this state, another state, the U.S. government or a foreign government.
·         Each applicant is required to provide a Social Security card or proof of social security number.
·         The cost is $66 cash (no checks) and $6 in Bexar County if couples bring in the "Twogether in Texas" certificate www.twogetherintexas.com - Prices may vary in different counties.
·         The legal age to obtain a marriage license without parental consent in Texas is 18 years of age. Application of age is 16 with parental consent.
·         No blood test is required.
·         If either applicant has been recently divorced, the state requires a 30-day waiting period from the date of the filed divorce decree, unless waived by the court. Female applicants are required to submit a certified copy of final decree showing their restored maiden name if different from current identification.
·         The license is good for 30 days from the date of purchase. However, there is a 72-hour waiting period from the time the license was purchased until the time the ceremony can be performed. Active duty military personnel are exempt. Both parties do not to need to be active military for the waiting period to be waived.
·        Applicants between the ages of 16-18 must be accompanied by one parent, to sign legal consent. A minor must have a certified copy of birth certificate, photo I.D. and proof of Social Security. If parents are divorced, the parent granted custody must submit a certified copy of their divorce decree in order to sign consent.  
Most county clerks’ offices are open Monday through Friday.
Call ahead to your local office to make sure they’re open before you make the trip.
